C. Stephen Foster., MD, FACS, FACR was born and raised in West Virginia, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry at Duke University, with Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa in 1965, and received his Doctor of Medicine Degree at Duke University Medical Center, in 1969, being elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He trained in Internal Medicine at Duke University Hospital from 1969 to 1970, and at the National Heart and Lung Institute, at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1970 to 1972, during which time he also taught Internal Medicine, with an appointment as Instructor in Medicine at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. In 1972, Dr. Foster entered his Ophthalmology Residency training program at Washington University (Barnes Hospital), in St. Louis, Missouri, and having completed that in 1975, traveled to Boston to do 2 additional Fellowship trainings in Cornea and External Diseases, and in Ocular Immunology. He completed this training in 1977 and was invited to join the full- time faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology of Harvard Medical School, where he was a member of the Cornea Service and Director of the Residency Training Program at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He began his independent research in 1977 and has since been continuously funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

After 30 years on the full time faculty of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, he decided to establish his own private practice—The Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution, a state of the art 12,000 square foot practice with its own chemo- therapy infusion suite and phlebotomy lab. Dr. Foster continues to direct a research labo- ratory at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution (MERSI), through the support of his newly created research foundation, The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation, and continues his teaching activities and training fellows as a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He has also authored over 600 published papers and 5 textbooks.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part describes our current understanding of bone biology and its primary regulatory pathways. This is intended to address recent regulatory requirements to evaluate skeletal development for drugs in development for pediatric populations. The second part of the book describes the principal techniques and methods used in bone research; understanding how these end-points are derived is fundamental to their appropriate application. These first two parts of the book provide the background and the means to develop the concepts in part three which describes bone and its interaction with other organ systems. The unique series of chapters in part three, contributed to by key leaders in their respective fields and in bone research, provides a comprehensive collective work. Although constantly evolving, the crosstalk and interaction of the skeleton with several organ systems is now recognized and well documented, such as for the reproductive system, muscle and kidney, while our understanding of the interaction with other organ systems, such as the immune system and CNS, is in its infancy. Recent work highlights the key role of the skeleton in the regulation of energy metabolism and the impact this has on research in metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. The hope is that this book will enlighten many and encourage more to explore the impact of new compounds on the skeleton in the development of effective and safe drugs.

About the Author

Susan Y. Smith is a consultant who specializes in nonclinical muscoloskeletal research. She provides guidance for the conduct of pharmacology, efficacy or safety studies, or help with data interpretation to unravel the mysteries of skeletal evaluations. She received a Master of Science in Pharmacology at McGill University and later joined Charles River Laboratories for almost 18 years and where she became Senior Scientific Director of Musculoskeletal Research. She has over 30 years of experience in preclinical safety assessments and toxicology and over 20 years of expertise in bone research.

After Dr Kowey’s training at Penn State University and Harvard University School of Public Health he joined the faculty at the Medical College of Pennsylvania as Director of the CCU and Arrhythmia Program, where he rose to the rank of full Professor.

Dr Kowey is a Fellow of several professional organizations including the Clinical Council of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. About the Author

Dr. Han-Ting Zhang received his M.D. from Southern Medical University (formerly the First Military Medical University) in Guangzhou and M.S. and Ph.D. of Pharmacology from Beijing Institute of Pharmacology & Toxicology, the Military Academy of Medical Sciences, China in 1995. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in 1998 and then at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2000. In 2005 Dr. Zhang joined the Departments of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry and Physiology & Pharmacology as a faculty at West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown, WV, USA. He has been a tenured Associate Professor there since 2012. Dr. Zhang is also a “Taishan Scholars” Overseas Distinguished Expert and Professor of Pharmacology at Taishan Medical University (adjunct), China.

Dr. Zhang’s major research interests focus on intracellular signaling in the mediation of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. More specifically, he is interested in exploring the roles of phosphodiesterase (PDE)-mediated cyclic nucleotide (cAMP, cGMP) signaling in depression, anxiety, alcohol dependence, drug abuse, and cognition deficits associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease. Development of novel drugs for treating these disorders is also one of his research foci.

Dr. Zhang has published nearly 80 research papers and review articles and 18 book chapters, most of which focusing on PDEs, in particular the PDE4 enzyme family. He has been awarded the NARSAD Young Investigator Award twice (2006 and 2008). Dr. Zhang has been served as the Guest Chief Editor of Current Pharmaceutical Design and currently serves as the Deputy Chief Editor/Associate Editor for Metabolic Brain Disease, Frontiers in Pharmacology, Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, Translational Neuroscience Review, Austin Psychiatry, and Editorial Board member for Scientific Reports and several other international journals.

About the Author

Skin diseases are highly prevalent among indigenous people, leading to low mortality but greatly impacting their quality of life. Such diseases can be observed in indigenous people; both those living in isolated communities and those who have since been urbanized to some degree share a common characteristic of presenting different clinical patterns than non-indigenous individuals. These specificities necessitate a special approach when diagnosing dermatologic diseases in indigenous people. However, these considerations are rarely discussed in standard dermatology books.

This Atlas addresses that gap by providing specific materials for professionals involved in the health of indigenous people, especially with those who live either alone or in remote areas. It offers a comprehensive overview of the most common skin diseases in specific tribes, providing a full clinical guide on the dermatologic signs and symptoms in these individuals. Additionally, the book complements the clinical standpoint with an anthropologic perspective, examining the impact of dermatologic diseases in indigenous people and the different meaning of these diseases in their lives. Most of the material presented in this Atlas was collected in the Xingu Program, a project created in 1965 by the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, and devoted to providing medical care to indigenous people from the Upper Xingu region, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Thus, the content is primarily applicable to South American indigenous people. However, the common characteristics of the isolation and non-urbanization of these communities, as well as the anthropologic perspective adopted here, allow the content to be extrapolated to other indigenous peoples worldwide. This Atlas will be a novel and valuable resource for health professionals who work with indigenous peoples, especially in geographic areas where dermatologists are not always readily available.
