Husband and Reznek’s Imaging in Oncology, 3rd edition (2 Vol Set) 3rd Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0415451671]

In recent years there has been recognition of the central role of imaging in the management of patients with cancer. The third edition of this widely acclaimed book builds on the foundations laid down by the first edition, the 1998 winner of the Royal Society’s award for the Multi-author Textbook of the Year, and the second (2004). The core of the book deals with the application of imaging in all tumours. An extensively referenced, evidence-based analysis is given of the role of imaging in planning treatment. Experienced opinion is provided as to the advantages and limitations of all relevant imaging modalities including ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET/CT and other nuclear medicine techniques.

Imaging in the recognition of metastatic disease is covered in detail with chapters detailing the range of appearances of deposits in each organ. Much attention is given to the differential diagnosis of focal pathology in each organ in patients with underlying malignancy and useful protocols for the performance of the study provided.

While including a section on new horizons in cancer imaging, such as the imaging of angiogenesis, MR lymphography and the rapidly evolving field of molecular imaging, the editors have not neglected the more traditional general principles of cancer behaviour and imaging. Hence, an outline of cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy is provided by experts. As therapy becomes more successful, increasingly important issues for the radiologist such as the assessment of response, the effect of treatment on normal tissues, the complications of treatment, and the risk of second malignancies are presented.

There are several outstanding features to this book: the colour diagrams of the staging systems are exquisite and allow the often complex systems to be understood easily and memorized; the organization of the book into different, clearly defined sections allow it to be used not only as a reliable reference text, but also to be read easily; key points and summaries in point form are provided throughout for quick revision.

This comprehensive book will not only be essential reading for all radiologists, but also important for all members of a multidisciplinary team looking after patients with cancer.

Critical updates are provided on terminology and classification; the discussion of biology and pathogenesis includes references to many molecular genetic and immunohistochemical findings from recent stem cell research. Individual chapters are devoted to germ cell tumors at different anatomic locations, including not only the ovaries and testes but also the mediastinum and central nervous system, and pediatric tumors. All of the contributing authors are opinion leaders from universities of excellence in Europe and the United States. This monograph will be of wide interest to practitioners and researchers in many fields of medicine, including pathology, gynecology, urology, and pediatrics, as well as stem cell scientists.

Assessing and Improving Value in Cancer Care: Workshop Summary 1st Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0309138140]

Unlike many other areas in health care, the practice of oncology presents unique challenges that make assessing and improving value especially complex. First, patients and professionals feel a well-justified sense of urgency to treat for cure, and if cure is not possible, to extend life and reduce the burden of disease. Second, treatments are often both life sparing and highly toxic. Third, distinctive payment structures for cancer medicines are intertwined with practice. Fourth, providers often face tremendous pressure to apply the newest technologies to patients who fail to respond to established treatments, even when the evidence supporting those technologies is incomplete or uncertain, and providers may be reluctant to stop toxic treatments and move to palliation, even at the end of life. Finally, the newest and most novel treatments in oncology are among the most costly in medicine.

This volume summarizes the results of a workshop that addressed these issues from multiple perspectives, including those of patients and patient advocates, providers, insurers, health care researchers, federal agencies, and industry. Its broad goal was to describe value in oncology in a complete and nuanced way, to better inform decisions regarding developing, evaluating, prescribing, and paying for cancer therapeutics.

Oncologic and Cardiologic PET/CT-Diagnosis: An Interdisciplinary Atlas and Manual 2008th Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=3540740902]

“This nuclear medicine atlas provides a complete overview of the diagnostic aspect of PET-CT … . The book is well organized with abundant illustrations and teaching points. … The audience includes nuclear medicine professionals, radiologists, oncologists, cardiologists, and residents and fellows in these areas. … a valuable resource for new practitioners as well as for experienced nuclear medicine physicians who interpret PET-CT in either oncology or cardiology. … This excellent atlas will be a great addition to any nuclear medicine physician’s library … .” (Oussama Nachar, Doody’s Review Service, October, 2008)

“The portion of this book dealing with oncology is updated information based on PET/CT-Atlas, a German-language book … . Each case presented in the book includes a brief clinical history, imaging findings, and teaching points. The images are clear and well done. … I highly recommend this book as a quick reference to nuclear physicians and radiologists in practice or in training. This atlas and manual will also be useful to oncologists, cardiologists, and imaging technologists.” (E. Edmund Kim, The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Vol. 50 (6), June, 2009)

From the Back Cover

Since 1999/2000 simultaneous imaging of anatomical features and metabolic activities using fused PET and CT images has complemented and in many cases even replaced what was originally done as separate analysis. – Is this a small revolution? – In fact, this new approach can be considered to be without a rival for imaging diagnosis. The complementary efforts of nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists have improved the diagnostic value of PET/CT scans. The successful use of PET/CT in the field of oncology has been documented world-wide, and in cardiology we can take advantage of the significant findings of PET diagnosis, particularly in the USA. New prospects are now available for paediatric oncology and molecular medicine.
Based on the experience gained by PET/CT experts with more than 10,000 patients, this manual impressively demonstrates the advantages of combined PET/CT. It also refers to publications from Europe, the USA and Asia as well as numerous studies.
