Kaufman examines the training and status of British military surgeons during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Their management of the sick and wounded during the wars with France leading up to and including the Peninsular War is also described. He concludes with an analysis of the medical problems associated with the Crimean War.

Using important contemporary texts, Kaufman describes the personalities who served in the British Army Medical Department during the late 18th and 19th centuries, when diseases caused a much higher mortality than injuries sustained in battle. Many military surgeons were only poorly trained, and the management of the sick and wounded only gradually improved over this period despite significant advances in medicine, surgery, and hygene. Government spending cuts after the Peninsular War greatly depleted the medical service of the army so that by the time of the Crimean War it was unable to cope with a European-style war. Deficiencies were recognized and, in the case of the medical services, this led to the establishment of the Army Medical School in 1860. This analysis should be of particular interest to serving military medical officers and to historians and other researchers interested in the management of 18th and 19th century armies in times of peace and war.

Sang-Hoon Park, MD, PhD, is a pioneer in the field of facial bone surgery in Korea and President and Chief of Surgeons at ID Hospital, Seoul, Korea. He began performing facial bone and orthognathic surgery while a faculty member at Asan Medical Center, Seoul. After founding his own private plastic surgery hospital in 2004, he focused increasingly on improving both functional and aesthetic aspects in patients undergoing facial bone surgery. He fabricated and invented the globally renowned “V-line surgery”, which significantly improved patients’ aesthetic satisfaction. To date, he has operated on more than 3,000 mandible and zygoma reduction surgery cases and is recognized for his work far beyond Korea – indeed, worldwide.

About the Author

Since 2009 he has been working in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Hospitals Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel. In 2013 he was appointed senior consultant in obstetrics and gynecology with the subspecialty endoscopic surgery. In 2014 he became Head of the Kiel School of Gynaecological Endoscopy and was appointed university lecturer.

Liselotte Mettler was born in Vienna, Austria. From 1959-1981 she conducted her medical studies, doctorate, gynaecological specialist training, habilitation, and professorship in Tübingen, Vienna, and Kiel. From 1981-2008 she was Deputy Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Hospitals Schleswig-Holstein. From 1990-2008 she was Director of the Kiel School of Gynecological Endoscopy and also Head of the Kiel Gynaecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine Division. Her main fields of activity are reproductive medicine, gynaecological endoscopy, and gynaecological endocrinology. Professor Mettler is actively participating in many societies and organisations. Despite retiring in 2008 she also serves as General Secretary of the International Academy of Human Reproduction (IAHR) with the 15th World Congress planned for March 2013 in Venice, Italy.

About the Author

He is currently Head of the Minimally Invasive Spine Therapy Unit at Cannizzaro Hospital. His main interests are percutaneous minimally invasive spine surgery using X-ray and CT-guided techniques with only local anesthesia. He has personally performed more than 3000 procedures in this field since 1999, including procedures using third-generation interspinous spacers, the full range of augmentation procedures for the spine (vertebro/kypho/vesselplasty and vertebral stent), posterior trans and intraarticular fusion, radio and cryoablation of tumors and facets, and percutaneous discectomy. Dr. Manfrè was one of the founding members of the European Vertebroplasty Research Team (EVEREST) in 2004 and has won 16 international and national prizes. He won the “best paper of the year” prize from the American Society of Spine Radiology in 2007, 2009, and 2012. He has published more than 200 papers and with Springer he has previously published Spinal Imaging (in 2007), Interventional Neuroradiology of the Spine (in 2013), and Imaging Spine After Treatment (also in 2013).
