This book presents various skills to help surgeons improve their day-to-day performance and development including professionalism, communication, situation awareness, decision making, leadership, and technical dexterity. It also offers advice on how to organise a surgical theatre list, improve theatre efficiency, prepare for surgical interviews and participate in surgical research and audit. Furthermore, it emphasises the need to strive for safety in surgery and to learn from things going wrong. The complex world of emotions that surgeons may encounter is also discussed. The guidance presented here may be of value to any aspiring surgeon, whatever their surgical specialty, and wherever they choose to practise.

The skills highlighted in this book reflect the author’s initial experiences as a surgical trainee, the teachings of his senior trainers, as well as his subsequent involvement in supervising multiple junior surgeons as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Much of the material presented is supported by an extensive literature review. This book complements the previously published book “Career Skills for Doctors” by the same author.

Bambos (short for Charalambos) studied Medicine at the University of Manchester, UK and completed his postgraduate surgical and orthopaedic training in the North West of England. He is currently a consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, UK, where he leads and manages his team, providing a busy clinical service.

Bambos is an Honorary Professor at the University of Central Lancashire School of Medicine and has a keen interest in medical education, acting as clinical and educational supervisor, as well as mentor to multiple junior surgeons at various levels of training. He is an enthusiast in clinical research and audit and has published extensively in these areas.

This book offers detailed guidance on the use of imaging in the context of bariatric surgery. After a summary of the types of surgical intervention, the role of imaging prior to and after surgery is explained, covering both the normal patient and the patient with complications. The most common pathologic features that may be encountered in daily practice are identified and illustrated, and in addition the treatment of complications by means of interventional radiology and endoscopy is described. The authors are acknowledged international experts in the field, and the text is supported by surgical graphs and flow charts as well as numerous images. Overweight and obesity are very common problems estimated to affect nearly 30% of the world’s population; nowadays, bariatric surgery is a safe and effective treatment option for people with severe obesity. Andrea Laghi has been Associate Professor of Radiology at Sapienza University of Rome since 2006 and Director of Radiology Unit at I.C.O.T. Hospital, Latina, Italy since 2008. He is also Director of the Residency Program in Diagnostic Radiology at Sapienza University of Rome (2006 to the present) and a member of several international societies. Professor Laghi is the author of 366 papers in peer-reviewed journals (Impact Factor: 810; H-Index: 45), 8 textbooks, and more than 60 book chapters. His main areas of research are magnetic resonance imaging (in particular of the liver and biliary ducts, pancreas, and small bowel), MR contrast media (liver- and lymph node-specific), computed tomography, single- and multislice spiral CT (in particular of the liver, pancreas and small bowel), CT colonography/virtual colonoscopy, image post-processing, and informatics in radiology.
