New Insights Into Retinal Degenerative Diseases

Since 1984, we have organized satellite symposia on retinal degenerations that are held in conjunction with the biennial International Congress of Eye Research. The timing and location of our Retinal Degeneration Symposia have allowed scientists and clinicians from around the world to convene and present their exciting new findings. The symposia have been arranged to allow ample time for discussions and one-on-one interactions in a relaxed atmosphere, where international friendships and collaborations could be established. The IXth International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration was held on October 9-14, 2000 in Durango, Colorado and was attended by over 100 scientists from six continents. This book contains many of their presentations. Several events of note occurred at this meeting. First, thanks to the generous support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, we were able to sponsor the travel of 11 young scientists from six countries. Most of them have contributed chapters to this volume. The response to the travel program was so overwhelming that we will make it regular feature of our meeting. This will allow other bright, young investigators to be introduced to the world experts who study retinal degenerations. Second, about 40% of the scientists who attended this meeting were there for the first time. We believe that this indicates a growing interest in retinal degeneration research and ensures that new talent will be attracted to this important area of investigation. The symposium received support from several organizations.

Raquel Seiça received her M.D. and her PhD and Aggregation in Medicine from University of Coimbra, Portugal. She is Full Professor of Physiology-Medicine and Head of the Institute of Physiology at the same University. She is also Investigator of the Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences-IBILI-Faculty of Medicine and Collaborator Investigator in the Center for Classical and Humanistic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Coimbra. Her scientific interests lie in diabetes mellitus and obesity. She is author of 130 peer-reviewed papers, 13 book chapters, 193 peer-reviewed published abstracts and 477 presentations. She supervised 3 post-doctoral projects, 9 PhD Thesis, 36 Master Thesis and 46 Research Program Training.

Regulation of Inflammatory Signaling in Health and Disease (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology) 1st ed

This book discusses recent research in innate immunity, which has revealed a large number of receptors that sense the presence of microorganisms or cellular damage in tissues. In complex tissues, many of these sensing events occur simultaneously. Thus, the downstream signaling pathways need to be integrated so that an appropriate cellular inflammatory response can be initiated. In addition, the inflammasome defines the molecular and cellular processes of inflammation in response to microbial infection. Previous data suggested that regulation of inflammasomes is mediated by microbes, but inflammasomes also have antimicrobial functions. Increasing evidence in mouse models, together with human data, strongly implicates an involvement of the inflammasome and uncontrolled inflammation in the initiation and progression of diseases with a high impact on public health.

Dr. Dakang Xu is Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Institute of Ageing Research, Hangzhou Normal University, China. The main focus of his research team is to used a combination of genetically modified mouse models of disease, cell signalling, bioinformatics

analyses and clinical applications, to understand the mechanisms of regulation of epigenetic factors in inflammatory signalling. He has also studied how modulation of the activity of those key factors affects the inflammatory response and tumour progression, through the function of immune cell subsets and cytokines in cancer and inflammatory diseases. Stroke is thought to be the second biggest killer worldwide, and is responsible for over 5 million deaths per year. Several strategies have been developed to enhance treatment of stroke patients. Multimodal neuroimaging allows physicians to diagnose and evaluate not only the ischemic core but also the vessel pattern and collateral status. Stroke Treatment involves extensive intravenous drug administration. Several new drugs with long lasting efficacy are now being tested in randomized clinical trials. In this context, endovascular treatment is a promising avenue that allows physicians to treat patients in extended time windows especially patients in whom intravenous RTPA has failed. Executive Summary

The time needed to learn a foreign language is impressive: hundreds of hours to transfer 5000+ words into a human brain and then hundreds more hours to understand people speaking at ‘3+ words/second’. In addition, language learning seems to be immune to the accelerating and streamlining effects of modern technology – today, like 50 years ago, it takes over 1000 hours to start being fluent in another language.

Here we present a method of double exposure to a new language through intense listening plus reading. The rationale for simultaneous ear/eye exposure is that incoming signals from the ear are processed in different brain areas than signals coming in from the eyes and both areas need to be trained simultaneously. Our free smartphone app Ear²Memory is designed to assist the initial 50 to 100 hours of language learning. The only requirements are:
