In recognition of his contributions to medical education he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2009. He is currently a Professor of Medicine and deputy head of school at the University of Newcastle, Australia. About the Author

Manuel Sobrinho-Simões MD, PhD, is co-founder and Director of IPATIMUP, Porto, Portugal. He is also Professor and Director of the Department of Pathology and Oncology of the Medical Faculty of the University of Porto, Portugal. His research interests are focused on thyroid cancer pathology: aetiopathogenesis,diagnosis, prognosis and therapy selection. He was President of the European Society of Pathology from 1999-2001 and is co-author of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th edition of the WHO book on endocrine tumours (1988, 2004 and 2016 (in preparation)). Manuel Sobrinho-Simões was voted the most influential pathologist in the World (2015) in a poll conducted by “The Pathologist”.

José Manuel Cameselle-Teijeiro, MD, PhD, is a member of the Department of Anatomic Pathology at the Clinical University Hospital in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and is Associate Professor of the Medical School there. His research interests are focused on thyroid tumors pathology, with an emphasis on familial

non-medullary thyroid cancer. He coordinates the Spanish Society of Anatomic Pathology`s Working Group on Endocrine Pathology and has co-authored several chapters of the 3rd and 4th editions of the WHO book on endocrine tumours. Catarina Eloy, MD, PhD, is Professor of Pathology at the University of Porto, Portugal, and serves as Medical Director of the IPATIMUP Diagnostic Unit. Her doctoral thesis was on papillay thyroid carcinoma and she is a co-author of the next WHO book on endocrine tumors (in preparation). Her research interests are focused on thyroid cancer pathology: etiopathogenesis, cytopathology and molecular pathology.

The contents of this book include 26 chapters including basic Science/Genetics, psychology and clinical aspects in different tumors. The contents of this package may inspire a profounder concern of coordinated strategy in cancer research and cancer management. Besides, it may also provide some clues to positioning of puzzles for innovating the target-based cancer therapy. Let’s move towards planning an appropriate social life style with an individualized diagnosis and management for cancer patients. About the Author

Professor Parvin Mehdipour has mainly focused on Cancer Genetics by considering the multi-disciplinary manner in her academic and research life through 34 years in Tehran University of Medical Sciences. She was inspired by puzzling the road maps of Genetic and tumor biology to find the directions and cross roads in cancer and cross-talk between the cancer cells. She had scientific links with DKFZ, Institutes of Human Genetics and Institute of Medical Genetics in Erlangen-Nuerenberg, Bonn, Humboldt/berlin, Dresden- and Manchester- University. She has initiated a cancer project on leukemia at Department of Genetics, Royal Liverpool hospital, University of Liverpool as her PhD thesis. Since then she was exploring on solid tumors to prove the cancer evolution and hypotheses in different cancers including breast and brain tumors and also tracing cancer biomarkers. Her aims and focal interests during last 20 years included early detection through Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) in cancer journey and innovating modeling of the metastatic cancer. The final destination of her task is personalized cancer managements and drug innovation. Her interests include painting, writing and nutrigenomics.

New Insights Into Retinal Degenerative Diseases

Since 1984, we have organized satellite symposia on retinal degenerations that are held in conjunction with the biennial International Congress of Eye Research. The timing and location of our Retinal Degeneration Symposia have allowed scientists and clinicians from around the world to convene and present their exciting new findings. The symposia have been arranged to allow ample time for discussions and one-on-one interactions in a relaxed atmosphere, where international friendships and collaborations could be established. The IXth International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration was held on October 9-14, 2000 in Durango, Colorado and was attended by over 100 scientists from six continents. This book contains many of their presentations. Several events of note occurred at this meeting. First, thanks to the generous support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, we were able to sponsor the travel of 11 young scientists from six countries. Most of them have contributed chapters to this volume. The response to the travel program was so overwhelming that we will make it regular feature of our meeting. This will allow other bright, young investigators to be introduced to the world experts who study retinal degenerations. Second, about 40% of the scientists who attended this meeting were there for the first time. We believe that this indicates a growing interest in retinal degeneration research and ensures that new talent will be attracted to this important area of investigation. The symposium received support from several organizations.

She is also Investigator of the Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences-IBILI-Faculty of Medicine and Collaborator Investigator in the Center for Classical and Humanistic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Coimbra. Her scientific interests lie in diabetes mellitus and obesity. She is author of 130 peer-reviewed papers, 13 book chapters, 193 peer-reviewed published abstracts and 477 presentations.
