Advanced Biometrics 1st ed. 2018 Edition

[amazon_link asins=’3319615440′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’aishabano-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’6176e538-554b-11e8-8a18-4b8fb8675701′]

This book describes a range of new biometric technologies, such as high-resolution fingerprint, finger-knuckle-print, multi-spectral backhand, 3D fingerprint, tongueprint, 3D ear, and multi-spectral iris technologies. Further, it introduces readers to efficient feature extraction, matching and fusion algorithms, in addition to developing potential systems of its own. These advanced biometric technologies and methods are divided as follows: 1. High-Resolution Fingerprint Recognition; 2. Finger-Knuckle-Print Verification; 3. Other Hand-Based Biometrics; and 4. New Head-Based Biometrics.

Traditional biometric technologies, such as fingerprint, face, iris, and palmprint, have been extensively studied and addressed in many research books. However, all of these technologies have their own advantages and disadvantages, and there is no single type of biometric technology that can be used for all applications. Many new biometric technologies have been developed in recent years, especia

lly in response to new applications. The contributions gathered here focus on how to develop a new biometric technology based on the requirements of essential applications, and how to design efficient algorithms that yield better performance.

Essentials of Biostatistics in Public Health (Essential Public Health) 3rd Edition

[amazon_link asins=’1284108198′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’aishabano-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’ea679d15-52e4-11e8-a09d-37ca8aa89a2f’]

Essentials of Biostatistics in Public Health, Third Edition provides a fundamental and engaging background for students learning to apply and appropriately interpret biostatistics applications in the field of public health.

Many examples are drawn directly from the author’s remarkable clinical experiences with the renowned Framingham Heart Study, making this text practical, interesting, and accessible for those with little mathematical background. The examples are real, relevant, and manageable in size so that students can easily focus on applications rather than become overwhelmed by computations.

The Third Edition offers a new chapter on data visualization and interpretation including guidance on reporting statistical results in tables, figures and text. Examples of well-organized, detailed and appropriately formatted tables and figures are provided along with samples of how best to interpret them. Examples of poorly organized tables and figures are also included to illustrate common misinterpretations of results, due in part to lack of clarity in presentation.

The text comes packaged with an access code card that gives your students access to an online workbook for statistical computing using Microsoft Excel. The online workbook is available in both Mac and PC versions.

Updates to the Third Edition:
• New chapter on data visualization and interpretation
• New “When and Why” sections in each chapter include timely examples of important medical and public health applications of biostatistical techniques to help students connect the technical aspects of how specific analyses are conducted to real and relevant applications. New suggestions for instructors to facilitate in-class discussions around these applications and their interpretation are included in the instructor resources
• New examples from widely publicized clinical trials and from relevant and timely studies added throughout.
• New integrative exercises included in the instructor resources that allow students to practice biostatistical analysis with real data using Excel.
• New link to a publicly available, longitudinal dataset containing data collected in the Framingham Heart Study

Systemic Vasculitides: Current Status and Perspectives 1st ed. 2016 Edition

[amazon_link asins=’3319401343′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’aishabano-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’2d753b19-4fe6-11e8-96e3-3f32b0c3786b’]

The systemic vasculitides, includinglarge, medium, small, and variable vessel vasculitis, have been the focus of intensive basic and clinical investigations over the last twodecades. Among theimportant advances stemming from these efforts are new definitions, classifications, and diagnostic criteria for the different classes of vasculitis; the addition of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies as a new criterion for classifying vasculitis; the recognition of  the viral etiology of conditions such as cryoglobulinemic vasculitis and polyarteritis nodosa; an appreciation of thebroad spectrum of clinical manifestations and potentially devastating complicationsassociated with vasculitis; the many features and remarkable clinical heterogeneity of IgG4-related, immune-mediated diseases; and the proposal of intriguing pathogenetic hypotheses for certain chronic, relapsing vasculitides.

This improved understanding of the systemic vasculitides has been accompanied by a trend away from the use of eponyms for these conditions; thus, established terms such as Wegener’s granulomatosis and Churg-Strauss syndrome have been replacedby the more descriptive definitions “granulomatosis with polyangiitis” and “eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis,” respectively.

Additional clinical laboratory tests, rapidly developing imaging techniques that can assess inflammation, especially in large-vessel vasculitis, and artificial neural network approaches will no doubt bring a wealth of informationthat ultimately leads to the identification of novel disease biomarkers. Expected applications include the identification of individuals at increased risk ofrelapsewho would benefit from patient-tailored therapy. Although the conventional combination of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive drugs is effective in the treatment of a large proportion of vasculitic disorders, safer medications, with fewer side effects, are being developed, includingseveral biological agents now being closely evaluated in multi-center studies.
