This book addresses various aspects of testicular autoimmunity. It has long been suspected that testicular autoimmunity could be one of the causes of idiopathic male infertility. However, it is very difficult to estimate the incidence of testicular autoimmunity in men, as most male patients first realize they are infertile when they start trying to conceive a child, and there is a possibility that their testes may already exhibit the end stage of testicular autoimmunity, in which lymphocytic inflammation and immunoglobulin deposition in their testes subsided long ago and only the spermatogenic disorder remains. Therefore, autopsy or biopsy for testicular tissues in men before the end stage of testicular autoimmunity and investigations using testicular autoimmunity model animals are needed to determine the epidemiology of testicular autoimmunity.

Accordingly, the book discusses “the immunological fragility of testis” with regard to male infertility, reviewing aut

opsy data in men and presenting experimental data using murine models of autoimmune orchitis that has been induced by immunizing with viable syngeneic testicular germ cells alone. Testicular autoimmunity in animals is also discussed.

About the Author

Dr. Masahiro Itoh obtained Ph.D. degree in Division of Medicine, Kagawa University, in 1987. he started his carrier as an assistant professor at Kagawa University, and promoted to full Professor in 2001, at Tokyo Medical University. He is one of the top scientists in Japan and well-known as he succeeded in making new murine models of autoimmune orchitis.

He has been conferred with the Honorary Fellow in Advanced laparoscopy (FALS) by the Indian Association for Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES). Currently, he is director at the GEM hospital group and heads the GEM Obesity and Diabetes Surgery Centre. His center is recognized by the Dr. MGR Medical University for conducting a tw- year fellowship program in bariatric surgery. Through his bi-annual training program, he has trained more than 150 surgeons in the field of bariatric surgery.

Dr. Praveen Raj is currently the President of the Indian chapter of the International Excellence Federation of Bariatric Surgery. He and his center were the first in South India to be accredited as an International Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation, USA. He has authored several papers on laparoscopic and bariatric surgery and presents frequently at conferences. His recently completed NASHOST trial, aimed to study the influence of bariatric surgery on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the first registered clinical trial on bariatric surgery in the country. He has also commenced a trial on lower BMI metabolic surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, which when completed will be the first of its kind in the world. He has also instituted international fellowship programs where physicians from abroad train with him in India.

Dr. Saravana Kumar graduated in surgery from the Madurai Medical College, India. He later acquired his laparoscopic skills at the renowned Gem Hospital & Research Centre, Coimbatore under Prof. C. Palanivelu. He is currently a consultant in the department of Bariatric and upper GI surgery at the same Institute. He has many international publications in the field of bariatric surgery and, along with Dr. Praveen Raj and Professor Palanivelu, is actively involved in training of surgeons. He is a member of the Obesity Surgery Society of India, Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India, and also the International Federation for Surgery of Obesity.

Dr Rachel Maria Gomes graduated and completed her surgical training with accolades from the Goa Medical College under the Goa University of India. She then further specialized in GI and Laparoscopic surgery at the Bhatia hospital and the Jaslok hospital at Mumbai. She is a Consultant GI & Laparoscopic Surgeon in Goa and is currently associated with the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery and Minimal Access Surgery unit of GEM Hospital and Research Centre at Coimbatore. She has to her credit more than 50 peer-reviewed national and international publications and has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences with several awards for outstanding presentations. About the Author

Dr Cotliar joined the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA faculty in 2004 after training there in both internal medicine and dermatology. While at UCLA, he directed the dermatology inpatient consult service and was heavily involved in the care of bone marrow transplant recipients. In 2010, he joined the faculty at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Department of Dermatology. While there, he was the Director of the Combined Dermatology-Medicine Training Program, as well as the Director of Clinical Operations within the Dermatology department. He was also Director of Photopheresis for Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and led the TARGET (Treatment of Adverse Reactions and GVHD EffecTs of Cancer) program. While at Northwestern, he received a medical dermatology career development award from the Dermatology Foundation to study “Improvement in the diagnosis of acute graft-versus-host disease.”

Dr Cotliar’s clinical and research focus is GVHD and toxicities related to anticancer therapies (both traditional chemotherapeutics and targeted agents). He has given many talks at national and international dermatology meetings, and has presented posters at ASCO, American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting, Society of Investigational Dermatology Annual Meeting, American Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation Annual Meeting, and World Congress of Dermatology. In 2015, he was recruited to join City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center to lead a new Division of Dermatology.
