Lysosomal Storage Disorders: A Practical Guide 1st Edition

51lechfft8l-_sx383_bo1204203200_

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0470670878]

Awareness of lysomal storage disorders needs to be raised and there is very substantial pharmaceutical interest to do so. The disorders are often viewed as obscurities but in fact they are treatable. Enzyme replacement therapy is available for four of the disorders and will be available for a further three disorders in the course of the next year. Substrate reduction therapy is licensed for one of them but in the course of the next 12 months it will be licensed for two others and a new form of substrate reduction therapy is being introduced.

These diseases present to a very wide range of physicians and paediatricians. Gaucher disease may present to orthopaedic surgeons or haematologists with splenomegaly and/or skeletal disease. However, paediatricians see the childhood variants of Gaucher disease and therefore may present it to neurologists. Fabry disease typically does not present in childhood but presents to adult physicians with end organ damage (renal failrure, cardiac disease, stroke, neuropathy, gastrointestinal symptoms). A text book would draw these divergent strands together.

There is substantial scientific interest in these diseases. Gaucher is well recognised as a paradigm of a molecular illness, understood at a basic level which is treatable now with specific therapy and is likely to be treatable with gene therapy within the coming five years. New advances in small molecule therapy – e.g. chaperone treatment, modified antibiotics affecting ribosomal function – are likely to be useful for these diseases in the near future. Trials are already underway. These diseases therefore offer a fabulous platform for teaching modern clinical science from basic genetics right the way through to clinical applications.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases 1st Edition

41zebkvgjpl-_sx350_bo1204203200_

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0470658355]

Sexually Transmitted Diseases present a major public health challenge. Over 25 diseases can be transmitted through sexual activity, and effective treatment, especially where long term infection can lead to further health problems, and in women infertility, requires good diagnostic skills and understanding of the best treatment methods. This book aims to give a practical guide to diagnosis and treamtent in a patient-centred framework, with care at the heart of the book.

The aim of the Gynecology in Practice Series is to provide a clinical ‘in the office’ or ‘at the bedside’ guide to effective patient care for gynecologists. The tone will be practical, not academic. The working assumption is that readers want to know what (and what not) might or should be done, without over emphasis on the why. That said, it is important to review the crucial basic science necessary for effective diagnosis and management, and to provide reminders in the context of the practical chapters.

The books will not be heavily referenced, in line with a more practical approach. This allows for smoother reading (and also relieves the burden of comprehensive citing from authors). Key evidence (clinical trials, Cochrane or other meta analyses) should be summarized in ‘Evidence at a Glance’ boxes and key references such as reviews, major papers can be provided in the ‘selected bibliography’ at the end of each chapter.

Practical guidance will be provided through:

  • the use of algorithms and guidelines where they are appropriate
  • ‘Tips and Tricks’ boxes – hints on improving outcomes perhaps via practical technique, patient questioning etc
  • ‘Caution’ warning boxes – hints on avoiding problems, perhaps via contraindications
  • ‘Science Revisited’ – quick reminder of the basic science principles necessary for understanding
