Clinical Problems in General Medicine and Surgery, 2e 2nd Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0443073236]

Clinical Problems provides a comprehensive selection of important medical and surgical scenarios. The reader is taken through 62 case histories step by step and is asked to interpret a broad range of medical data. Most of the clinical problems are accompanied by illustrations, which include cardiographs, radiographs, clinical and pathological photographs. In addition to detailed questions and answers, a commentary is provided that highlights the important issues of each case, as well as a guide to further topics of study.
The aim of any undergraduate curriculum is to produce graduates who have the knowledge and skills required to enable them to become competent members of the medical fraternity. Understandably, upon qualification these attributes will be raw and untried, but we expect them to be able to show that they possess what it is required of doctors in their first few years after graduation. What is ‘required’ in a clinical situation is often not obvious to the student and hence the reason for this book.
The book represents a departure from the traditional formula of systems and diseases, and an exhaustive review of each subject. Rather the authors have selected what they believe to be a number of important and, for the most part, relatively common medical and surgical scenarios and approached each from the perspective of the practicing clinician presented with a clinical problem. Whilst the book has been written primarily for undergraduates it describes clinical problems as they will be managed by recently qualified doctors.
It is not the purpose of this book to challenge or compete with standard reference material, rather it represents an important adjunct to the learning process of clinical reasoning, rather than provide the knowledge that must accompany it, although an considerable amount of factual material is to be found within its pages. Problem solving is a vital component of medical education, and while it can be taught well at the bedside and in small group tutorials, there are few books that help with this style of learning.

  • Addresses important medical and surgical topics from a problem-oriented approach.
  • Presents relevant clinical illustrations for each case, such as ECGs, radiographs, and clinical and pathologi-cal photographs.
  • Emphasizes empathy with the patient’s situation as well as effective patient counseling.
  • Provides commentaries from experienced clinicians, highlighting the most important issues of each case and offering suggestions on possible further areas of study.
  • Identifies situations where emergency management must take precedence over pathophysiological diagnosis.
  • Features extensive updates to reflect the increasing role of minimally invasive diagnostics.
  • Offers a new, full-color page design, with all-new photographs throughout.
  • Provides a stronger emphasis on the worldwide web as a source of further information.

The Essentials of Biostatistics for Physicians, Nurses, and Clinicians Paperback – 19 Aug 2011

41b2vjxycjl-_sx331_bo1204203200_

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0470641851]

Designed specifically for healthcare practitioners who need to understand basic biostatistics but do not have much time to spare, The Essentials of Biostatistics for Physicians, Nurses and Clinicians presents important statistical methods used in today′s biomedical research and provides insight on their appropriate application. Rather than provide detailed mathematics for each of these methods, the book emphasizes what healthcare practitioners need to know to interpret and incorporate the latest biomedical research into their practices.

The author draws from his own experience developing and teaching biostatistics courses for physicians and nurses, offering a presentation that is non–technical and accessible. The book begins with a basic introduction to the relationship between biostatistics and medical research, asking the question “why study statistics?,” while also exploring the significance of statisitcal methods in medical literature and clinical trials research. Subsequent chapters explore key topics, including:

  • Correlation, regression, and logistic regression
  • Diagnostics
  • Estimating means and proportions
  • Normal distribution and the central limit theorem
  • Sampling from populations
  • Contingency tables

Throughout the book, statistical methods that are often utilized in biomedical research are outlined, including repeated measures analysis of variance, hazard ratios, contingency tables, log rank tests, bioequivalence, cross–over designs, selection bias, and group sequential methods. Exercise sets at the end of each chapter allow readers to test their comprehension of the presented concepts and techniques.

The Essentials of Biostatistics for Physicians, Nurses, and Clinicians is an excellent reference for doctors, nurses, and other practicing clinicians in the fields of medicine, public health, pharmacy, and the life sciences who need to understand and apply statistical methods in their everyday work. 41mc3ehs7ml-_sx331_bo1204203200_

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=0470519673]

This book summarizes and explains the main approaches to age estimation in the living, defining when a parameter may be of use and raising awareness of its limitations. This text ensures that practitioners recognize when an assessment is beyond their area of expertise or beyond verification depending upon the clinical data available. Each key approach to age evaluation has been allotted a single chapter, written by an international leader in the particular field. The book also includes summary chapters that relay readily accessible data for use by the practitioner, and includes important “ageing milestones.”

This book is indispensable where problems of immigration and legal standing, juvenile vs. adult criminal status, and responsibilities of law enforcement to protect vulnerable persons are key issues on a daily basis.  Medical practitioners, forensic practitioners such as pathology, odontology, anthropology and nursing, lawyers, and police would find this book incredibly useful.
