Fundamentals of Diagnosing and Treating Eating Disorders: A Clinical Casebook 1st ed. 2017 Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=3319460633]

This concise text contains clinical cases covering different types of dysfunctional eating with a focus on the eating disorders in the DSM-5, including the new disorder Avoidant-Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Each case will follow the format of clinical presentation, diagnosis, discussion, and suggested readings. The discussion sections will prioritize treatment and management, with practical tips for clinicians. The text will also include boxed “quick snapshots” with important fundamentals that are relevant to the case and the diagnosis or diagnoses being presented.  Presentations that are common in clinical practice, but that may not fit neatly into one specific diagnostic category, will also be reviewed, with guidance on principles of assessment, prioritization of problems, formulation, and management. The book encourages the consideration of comorbidities and differential diagnosis. The structure of the book’s content will give readers a head-start in honing their differential diagnosis skills in the area of eating disorders. The book is split into three categories, based on the most immediately visible features of the case: I. The person who eats too little, II. The person who eats too much, III. The person who eats in an odd or idiosyncratic way. For teaching purposes, several of the cases describe a “not normal” eating presentation that are not classified within one of the current definitions of a psychiatric disorder.
Fundamentals of Diagnosing and Treating Eating Disorders is aimed at psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and other clinicians who may see patients with eating disorders.

Diet and Nutrition in Palliative Care 1st Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=1439819327]

Optimal terminal and palliative care requires consideration of the patient and family unit as well as cultural and religious sensitivities. The patient’s well being in terms of mobility, anxiety, stress, social interaction, and pain control needs expert focus and attention. Furthermore, there is an increasing awareness that diet and nutritional support plays an integral part of the patient’s holistic well being. The interface between nutritional, emotional, cultural, and medicinal support challenges terminal and palliative care providers to recognize the right thing to do, often in the face of considerable uncertainty.

Currently, there is no comprehensive book on nutrition in terminal or palliative care that is suitable for novices and experts alike. Diet and Nutrition in Palliative Care addresses this deficiency in the literature. Designed for doctors, nurses, caregivers, and those working within the palliative or end of life domain, each chapter contains sections on applications to other areas of terminal or palliative care, practical methods and techniques, guidelines, key points and ethical issues. The book is divided into six sections:

  • Setting the Scene
  • Cultural Aspects
  • General Aspects
  • Cancer
  • Non-Cancer Conditions
  • Pharmacological Aspects

Despite the complexity of the correlation between diet and disease, there is now a sufficient body of evidence to encourage applying nutritional science in everyday clinical practice. Increasingly, a strong interest and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of scientific studies on nutrition enables clinicians to help patients under their care more effectively at every stage of their illness. In response to this need, this handbook presents important information on the holistic use of nutrition and diet therapy in palliative care.

Barasi’s Human Nutrition: A Health Perspective, Third Edition 3rd Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=1444137204]

Barasi’s Human Nutrition: A Health Perspective, Third Edition, provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of nutrition. Thoroughly revised, restructured, and updated, this new edition presents up-to-date scientific information in an accessible and reader-friendly format, emphasising how important nutrition is for evidence across the full translational health spectrum, from epidemiology and basic sciences through clinical and public heath applications, and ultimately into sustainable public policy.

This third edition places more emphasis on applied nutrition than previous editions. Specifically, sections relating to clinical nutrition, public health nutrition, and improving foods for better health are now separate chapters with new chapters on sport nutrition, obesity, and weight management, and each section has a dedicated table of contents to better highlight the subject covered. The book also focuses on nutritional issues related to globally important, potentially preventable, major diseases, such as coronary heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, and discusses methods for studying nutrition and relevant essential dietary principles for intervention.

This textbook is written from the perspective of experienced teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is an invaluable resource for students in health and nutrition and for those pursuing further qualifications in food science. While containing substantial detail on some interesting topics, this book is written in an ‘easy-read’ style, which makes potentially complicated subjects accessible to general readers as well as to the more specialised user. It provides both an entry-level introduction to human nutrition for introductory or intermediate undergraduate students and also sufficient comprehensive detail to serve as a reference book for Masters or PhD students.
