Manifestations of Stroke (Frontiers of Neurology and Neuroscience, Vol. 30) 1st Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=3805599102]

Stroke is the most common neurologic disease and the leading cause of adult disability in Western countries. The initial diagnosis of stroke is clinical and needs to be done as rapidly as possible to guarantee optimal medical and interventional therapy. The emergency stroke management depends heavily upon stroke scores to quantify the damage and to speed up the diagnosis process. Unfortunately, several important stroke syndromes are not taken into consideration in these currently used stroke scores and therefore tend to be overlooked and not treated. Compiled by leading international experts, this book provides an excellent overview on current stroke syndromes, including particularly problematic clinical pictures. Thus, together with stroke scores, the publication will lead to more thorough assessments in emergency settings. This book is indispensable for neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and physicians involved in the care of stroke patients.

Parkinson’s Disease and Nonmotor Dysfunction (Current Clinical Neurology) 2nd ed. 2013 Edition

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=1607614286]

The first edition of Parkinson’s Disease and Nonmotor Dysfunction was published in 2005 to provide a source of detailed information that could be readily accessed by the practicing physician.  The widely praised first edition described and explained these nonmotor features that had at that point received insufficient attention both in the medical and in the lay literature.  Since the publication of the first edition, awareness and knowledge of the nonmotor features of PD has dramatically expanded, calling for a new edition of this important title.  Timely, fully updated and expanded, Parkinson’s Disease and Nonmotor Dysfunction, Second Edition, offers a state-of-the-art overview of the topic from the same talented group of experienced researchers and clinicians who were the driving force behind the first edition.  Importantly, a range of additional aspects of nonmotor dysfunction in PD — such as dermatological, vestibular, and dental dysfunction — have been included in this second edition, which remains subdivided into five diverse domains: Behavioral abnormalities, autonomic dysfunction, sleep-related dysfunction, sensory dysfunction, and other aspects of PD such as oculomotor dysfunction, fatigue, and maxillofacial issues.  An invaluable contribution to the literature in movement disorders, this revised and expanded collection of contributions by an even larger contingent of superbly knowledgeable authors will further increase awareness of the manifold contributions that nonmotor features may make to the collective clinical picture experienced by the patient with PD.

Managing the Kidney when the Heart is Failing

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=1461436907]

The presence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) increases the risk of death from cardiovascular causes and makes the management of heart failure difficult.  The coexistence of CKD and heart failure is increasing in prevalence worldwide and requires a unique and subtle approach to patient management.

Managing the Kidney in Heart Failure focuses on the therapeutic management of cardio renal patients.  Common heart and kidney failure conditions are presented along with treatment scenarios aimed to reduce cardiovascular mortality and preserve kidney function.

Co-authored by a Nephrologist and Cardiologist, each chapter of this concise and practical handbook offers a unified perspective to these chronic conditions.

From the reviews:

“This is a practical and concise handbook on the management of patients with cardiorenal syndrome. … The audience is not limited to nephrologists or to cardiologists, but includes basically anybody involved in the care of patients with heart failure/disease and renal insufficiency. … What I particularly like about this book is the way it addresses in a systematic manner day-to-day, clinical practice questions.” (Mony Fraer, Doody’s Review Service, October, 2012)
