Due to parallel advances in signal processing and computer hardware in the last 15 years, quantitative ultrasound techniques have reached maturity, allowing for the construction of quantitative maps or images of soft tissues.

This book will focus on 5 modern research topics related to quantitative ultrasound of soft tissues:

– Spectral-based methods for tissue characterization, tissue typing, cancer detection, etc.;
– Envelope statistics analysis as a means of quantifying and imaging tissue properties;
– Ultrasound elastography for quantifying elastic properties of tissues (several clinical ultrasound scanners now display elastography images);
– Scanning acoustic microscopy for forming images of mechanical properties of soft tissues with micron resolution (desktop size scanners are now available); and
– Ultrasound computer tomography for breast cancer imaging (new ultrasound tomography systems have been developed and are currently under evaluation clinically

With the rapid growth in the cost of imaging and political and market pressures to contain health care costs, physicians are being encouraged to order only appropriate radiologic exams and to rationalize their choices. The American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria have emerged as a widely accepted standard by which the appropriate use of radiologic exams is judged. This book is designed to enable physicians and trainees to learn the ACR recommendations in a clinically relevant and intellectually stimulating way. More than 400 clinical scenarios are organized into ten modules based on organ systems. Each scenario is addressed by means of an interactive quiz in which the reader is invited to select the best option from a number of imaging modalities. Each choice is given a numerical rating of appropriateness, with accompanying comments when necessary. Correlative images of pathologies are included to enhance the reader’s appreciation of the diagnostic power of the modality in question. Vittorio Miele has been working at the University Hospital Careggi in Florence since October 2016 as Chairman of both the Emergency Radiology Unit and the Radiology and Laboratory Department.
For the previous fourteen years, he served as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Radiology at S. Camillo Hospital in Rome.
He is a past President of the Italian College of Emergency Radiology and is currently a Member of the Board of the Italian Society of Radiology (SIRM). He has authored over 300 papers and edited several monographs.

Margherita Trinci works at S. Camillo Hospital in Rome in the Department of Emergency Radiology.
She is Senior Radiologist in the fields of Emergency Radiology and Pediatric Radiology, she is also a Member of the Board of the Italian College of Pediatric Radiology.
She has authored over 50 papers and co-edited several monographs.
