A definitive resource, The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Imaging, second edition provides extensive coverage of all cardiovascular imaging modalities. Produced in collaboration with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging with contributions from specialists across the globe and edited by a distinguished team of experts, it is a ‘state of the art’ clinically-orientated imaging reference.

Now fully revised and updated with the latest imaging techniques and technology and covering even more conditions than before, it not only discusses the principles of individual modalities but also clearly demonstrates the added value each technique can bring to the treatment of all cardiac diseases. Richly illustrated with colour figures, images, and tables and using a wealth of newly available evidence to link theory to practice, it demonstrates how these techniques can be used in the diagnosis of a range of cardiovascular diseases. Learning how to apply them in practice is made easy with free access to videos and imaging loops online along with the full text so that it is always available, even when on the move.

Impressive in scope, The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Imaging contains information on cutting-edge technical developments in echocardiography, CT, CMR and hybrid imaging and well imaging’s current role in cardiac interventions, such as identifying cardiac structures, helping to guide procedures and exclude possible complications. The application of imaging modalities in conditions such as valvular and coronary heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, peri-myocardioal disease, adult congenital heart disease and aortic disease, is also extensively considered.

From discussion on improved imaging techniques and advances in technology, to guidance and explanation of key practices and theories, this new edition of The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Imaging is the ideal reference guide for cardiologists and radiologists alike.

In CT Suite the doctor and anthropologist Barry F. Saunders provides an ethnographic account of how a particular diagnostic technology, the computed tomographic (CT) scanner, shapes social relations and intellectual activities in and beyond the CT suite, the unit within the diagnostic radiology department of a large teaching hospital where CT images are made and interpreted. Focusing on how expertise is performed and how CT images are made into diagnostic evidence, he concentrates not on the function of CT images for patients but on the function of the images for medical professionals going about their routines. Yet Saunders offers more than insider ethnography. He links diagnostic work to practices and conventions from outside medicine and from earlier historical moments. In dialogue with science and technology studies, he makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the visual cultures of medicine.

Saunders’s analyses are informed by strands of cultural history and theory including art historical critiques of realist representation, Walter Benjamin’s concerns about violence in “mechanical reproduction,” and tropes of detective fiction such as intrigue, the case, and the culprit. Saunders analyzes the diagnostic “gaze” of medical personnel reading images at the viewbox, the two-dimensional images or slices of the human body rendered by the scanner, methods of archiving images, and the use of scans as pedagogical tools in clinical conferences. Bringing cloistered diagnostic practices into public view, he reveals the customs and the social and professional hierarchies that are formulated and negotiated around the weighty presence of the CT scanner. At the same time, by returning throughout to the nineteenth-century ideas of detection and scientific authority that inform contemporary medical diagnosis, Saunders highlights the specters of the past in what appears to be a preeminently modern machine.

This book provides a comprehensive clinical review of diagnostic and interventional applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound at the point-of-care. As more rheumatologists and other musculoskeletal providers in training and in practice learn the skill of musculoskeletal ultrasound, an increasing number of them will seek study materials for exam preparation and practical knowledge that apply to their clinical practice. Each chapter covers a standardized protocol of joint images with probe placement, and includes numerous examples of common ultrasound pathologies, clearly addressing what kind of pathology to look for with specific ultrasound image views. Review topics are emphasized, and study tools such as key-concept overviews, lists of important studies in the field, and extensive questions for self-assessment are included throughout. Because ultrasound training is moving toward becoming a mandatory part of rheumatology fellowship and has become mandatory in physical medicine and rehabilitation residencies, this book is a valuable educational resource for rheumatologists, physiatrists, and musculoskeletal providers seeking a practical review guide for preparation of certification exams and use in clinical practice.

This book, now in its revised and updated third edition, is designed to meet the needs of both novice and experienced sonographers by offering a superbly illustrated, wide-ranging account of the use of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of vascular diseases. Each of the main chapters is subdivided into text and atlas sections. The text part documents the relevant ultrasound anatomy, explains the examination procedure, specifies the indications for diagnostic ultrasound, describes normal and pathological findings, and considers the clinical impact of the examination. The atlas part presents a rich compilation of case material illustrating the typical ultrasound findings for both common vascular diseases and rarer conditions that are nevertheless significant for the vascular surgeon and angiologist. The new edition places special emphasis on the role of hemodynamics in clinical symptomatology, and the use of spectral analysis techniques is fully explained. Particular attention is also drawn to the sources of potential discrepancies between investigative methods, including different ultrasound studies, the role of contrast-enhanced studies, and the therapeutic consequences of pathological findings. Helpful algorithms are included to illustrate how targeted ultrasound diagnosis often permits therapeutic planning without the need for further imaging techniques.
