Many are recognized experts in the field and some are considered founding fathers of minimally invasive surgery in children. Merrill McHoney, MBBS, FRCS, PhD, studied at the University of West Indies and the University of London. He subsequently specialized in pediatric surgery, working at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital, among others. He is currently a Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. Mr. McHoney has been the recipient of significant research awards and prizes. He has published in leading peer-reviewed journals and also contributed a number of chapters in edited books.

Edward M. Kiely is a consultant and surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He studied medicine at University College Cork and in 2011 was awarded an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Imran Mushtaq is a Consultant Paediatric Urologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital and Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health, London, started his career as a paediatric urologist in 2001. He pioneered minimally invasive urological surgery in London and is widely regarded as one of the leading laparoscopic surgeons in the UK, with expertise in the techniques of nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, pyeloplasty and robotic surgery.

About the Author

Professor Girolamo Mattioli is Director of the Pediatric Surgery School, University of Genoa, and Head of the Pediatric Surgery Unit at the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa, Italy. He has performed more than 5000 surgical procedures in children, 3000 of them using a minimally invasive approach. He is the author of more than 300 publications and a member of the principal pediatric surgical societies (EUPSA, IPEG, SICP). He is a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Journal of Urology, and Journal of Laparoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques. Professor Mattioli’s research fields cover all aspects of pediatric minimally invasive surgery, and he has a particular interest in morbidity and mortality and urology research.

Dr. Paul Petralia graduated in Medicine and Surgery and subsequently specialized in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine with a special focus on hospital organization. He first worked in health management in rehabilitation and outpatient facilities, before acquiring the skills required to become a managing director. He was appointed managing director of IRCCS Gaslini Children’s Hospital in July 2010 and in 2011 was elected President of the Italian Children’s Hospitals. He has directed simultaneously many non-profit organizations and has extensive experience as a coordinator and national and regional representative. He has been a member of the board of directors of several organizations, including the Galliera Hospital in Genoa. He is also a journalist and Adjunct Professor of Health Organization on two degree courses and one school of specialization in the Faculty of Medicine, Genoa University.
