200 Best of Five Questions for Nephrology Specialty Certificate Exam with Revision Notes and Guidelines

Introduced in 2010, the Nephrology SCE (Specialty Certificate Examination)
is compulsory for the Nephrology trainees to gain a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in the Specialty. Candidates who have sat for the exam with their written MRCP are familiar with the best of five formats where they select the best of five plausible and comparable answers. This requires both knowledge and exam technique that is often best achieved through practice questions.

Currently, difficulty of exam preparation is the unavailability of reliable practice questions. This book seeks to fill that void by providing the best of five questions that resemble the exam format with their explanatory answers. The question material was written with the 2010 syllabus in mind and based on contemporary guidelines from KDIGO, KDOQI, ISPD and Renal Association.

Our goal was to create a valuable tool for all trainees revising for the SCE exam, American Board of Nephrology and Arab Board of Nephrology Exam.

Our authors were supported by consultants in the region and we offer our thanks to them all.
We would like to extend our gratitude to our parents and families. Without their support, blessings and encouragement this would not be possible.

We acknowledge the graciousness of our patients who consented the publishing of their pictures for education purposes. We would also like to credit Dr. Ramesh Abdullah for providing renal histology slides from his personal collection.

Finally, much appreciation is given to Professor Philip Kalra for providing his inspirational commentary for this book.

Pathogenesis and Treatment in IgA Nephropathy: An International Comparison 1st ed

[amazon template=iframe image2&asin=4431555870]

This book discusses the latest findings on the pathogenesis and treatment of IgA nephropathy. It particularly focuses on recently recognized initiation and progression factors and the varying treatment strategies in different regions, such as Asia, Europe, and the United States. More than 40 years have passed since Dr. Jean Berger first described primary IgA nephropathy (“Nephropathy with mesangial IgA-IgG deposits”) as a new disease entity.

Immunohistopathologically, IgA nephropathy is characterized by the granular deposition of IgA (IgA1) and C3 in the glomerular mesangial areas with mesangial cell proliferation and the expansion of mesangial matrices. It is clear that IgA nephropathy is one of the most common types of chronic glomerulonephritis in the world. This disease may lead to end-stage kidney disease, with its enormous economic impact on healthcare everywhere. Efforts by many investigators around the world have gradually clarified various aspects of the pathogenesis and treatment of IgA nephropathy. However, there are many controversial strategies for the treatment of patients with IgA nephropathy throughout the world, as there are several limitations for treatment in each country. This volume provides nephrologists everywhere with an overview and comparison of both global and regional findings in basic and clinical fields in IgA nephropathy. It covers genetic variation, aberrant IgA1 production, and classification etiology, guidelines, and treatment goals, with all chapters written by top international researchers.

Management of Acute Kidney Problems

[amazon template=banner easy&asin=3540694137]

From the Back Cover

Acute kidney failure is an important clinical area in the intensive care unit setting. An estimated 5–20% of critically ill patients experience an episode of acute kidney failure during the course of their illness, and about 5% of patients admitted to an ICU will eventually require renal replacement therapy. In these patients, in-hospital mortality is extremely high, exceeding 50%. Thus, the early detection and causal treatment of acute kidney problems is vitally important for a successful outcome. Written by internationally renowned experts, this clinical reference offers helpful advice with the most recent information on

  • definition
  • epidemiology
  • pathophysiology
  • clinical causes of acute kidney failure
  • differential diagnostic approaches for patients with acute renal failure
  • various key aspects related to the adequate delivery of acute renal replacement therapy

It also gives a detailed outline of important measures for their clinical management. This reference is intended as a helpful guide for all clinicians involved in the care of patients at risk of developing acute kidney problems.
