About the Author

J.A. Baart graduated in Dentistry from the Catholic University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1975 and then trained as an oral-maxillofacial surgeon at the Free University in Amsterdam. He has been a staff member of the Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery, Free University Medical Center (VUmc) and the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) since 1979. Dr. Baart has taught the dental students of ACTA the practical aspects of administration of local anesthetics for the past four decades. He is the author of 34 articles in international publications and editor of two Dutch textbooks on oral/oral and maxillofacial surgery.

H.S. Brand gained a Master’s degree in Medical Biology in 1986 from the Free University in Amsterdam and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 1990. Since 1994 he has been Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Dental Interaction and Department of Oral Biochemistry, Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Since 1996, Dr. Brand has been teaching the “side effects of local anesthetics” and he coordinated the course “Introduction to local anesthesia” at ACTA for a number of years. He is the author of almost 100 international publications and editor-in-chief of Algemene Ziekteleer voor Tandheelkunde, a Dutch textbook on internal medicine for dentists now in its third edition (Bohn Stafleu van Loghum/Houte, the Netherlands).

Zoran Stajčić, MSc, PhD, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, is Chief Surgeon at the Dental/Medical Center for Maxillofacial Surgery, “Beograd-Centar”, Belgrade, Serbia. Dr. Stajčić is former Professor of Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Faculty of Stomatology, University of Belgrade, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Banja Luka, and the Bristol Dental Hospital, University of Bristol, UK, as well as former Professor of Oral Implantology in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Novi Sad. Professor Stajčić is a fellow of the International Team for Implantology (Registered Speaker) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is a past President of the Serbian Association for Oral Implantology and the Dental Chamber of Serbia, as well as a past Councilor of the European Association for Cranio-maxillofacial Surgery. Professor Stajčić has published 76 articles in peer-review journals and is the author or editor of four textbooks. Thomas Kvist, DDS, PhD, is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Endodontology at the Institute of Odontology, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Dr. Kvist graduated in 1983 from the School of Dentistry, Göteborg in 1983 and went on to complete his Specialist Certification in Endodontics in 1994 and his doctorate in Odontology (Göteborg University) in 2001. Prior to joining the Institute of Odontology at The Sahlgrenska Academy, he was Director of Postgraduate Training in Endodontology in the Department of Endodontology, Faculty of Odontology, Public Dental Health, Gothenburg and Head of Clinic, Special Clinic for Endodontics, Public Dental Health Service, Gothenburg.
