This workbook is designed to teach the major fundamental concepts in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and clinical research design alongside the textbook “Epidemiology and Biostatistics, 2nd Edition”. It is written in concise and organized fashion with many examples to illustrate the concepts deriving from a collection of written materials created to teach Epidemiology and Biostatistics to medical students. The major differences from related titles include a “story” based approach toward teaching the material, relative brevity while maintaining focus on key concepts, and taking the perspective of first-time learners (avoiding and/or clearly defining jargon, using clear common-sense language). It features a variety of questions: long, short, and multiple choice questions. The workbook is made to provide students with the tools necessary to form their own informed conclusions from the clinical research literature.

The purpose of this book is to provide public health, disability, and rehabilitation professionals and practitioners evidence-based science with respect to health disparities faced by people with disabilities, especially people with mobility limitations; alternative methods of rehabilitation and exercise science for this population; assistive device technology; and, improved access to health care, employment, and social participation.

According to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), approximately 57 million Americans live with a disability. Disability severity and types vary considerably, such that each individual with a disability faces unique physical, social, and environmental barriers in order to enjoy quality of life and full participation in society. A large research literature shows that people with disabilities face substantial employment and health disparities compared to people without disabilities. People with mobility limitations often experience secondary conditions to compound their primary disability. Hollar (2013) and Hollar and Lewis (2015) showed that people with mobility limitations were significantly more likely to experience obesity and lack of access to physical exercise. Other studies have shown that access to proper physical examination facilities and equipment remain a substantial barrier in many clinics and hospitals despite the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago. Research on alternative exercise programs and new assistive device technologies offers promise to improve physical functioning and exercise for people with mobility limitations. Furthermore, increased focus on biopsychosocial over traditional medical models for disability will help policymakers and the public to recognize the complex, contextual issues (e.g., personal, social, environmental) that affect the lives of people with disabilities.

Readership includes public health practitioners and educators, disability and rehabilitation researchers, clinicians and sports medicine practitioners, and disability advocates. There have been general handbooks on disability, but advances in technology and alternative exercise programs, as well as novel disability health programs, are dispersed in the research literature. This book will help to highlight these programs for health policy experts, especially given the high health and social disparities experienced by this population.

This book is a practical, user-friendly guide for diagnosing and treating patients with rare rheumatic diseases of immunologic dysregulation. Covering uncommon diseases such as IgG4-Related Disease, Castleman’s Disease, and Felty Syndrome, chapters aggregate information from case reports and anecdotal literature to create a single, comprehensive handbook for treating patients. Each chapter provides historical perspective and epidemiology; a literature review (including research trials, translational research, historical and current case reports, and case series); pathogenesis; clinical presentation; laboratory evaluation; imaging; histopathology; treatment; and outcomes. Rare Rheumatic Diseases of Immunologic Dysregulation is an invaluable resource for rheumatologists, rheumatology fellows, and clinical immunologists to better diagnose and treat patients with rare rheumatic diseases.

The discovery of ER by Dr. Elwood Jensen exactly 60 years ago has not only led to the birth of a whole new vital nuclear receptor research field but also made a rapid, direct and lasting impact on the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. Since that landmark discovery, tremendous progress has been made in our understanding of the molecular functions of ER and development of targeted therapies against ER pathways for breast cancer treatment. However, there is currently no book available addressing these discoveries and recent advancement in a historical and systematic fashion. This book is intended to provide comprehensive, most up-to-date information on the history and recent advancement of ER and breast cancer by world renowned leaders in the field. These chapters include the history of the discovery of ER; physiological and pathological roles of ER; recent discovery of ER cistrome, transcriptome and its regulation of noncoding RNAs such as microRNAs and enhancer RNAs in breast cancer; development and clinical practices of the first targeted therapy Tamoxifen and other antiestrogens for breast cancer treatment; structural basis of ER and antiestrogen actions; molecular insights into endocrine resistance; the role of ER mutants, ER-beta and environmental estrogens in breast cancer; and emerging state-of-the-art therapeutic approaches currently in development to overcome treatment resistance and future perspectives. The book will provide undergraduate and graduate students, basic scientists and clinical cancer researchers, residents, fellows, as well as clinicians, oncology educators and the general public a thorough and authoritative review of these exciting topics.

Following the first international symposium ever held in Asia on Advances in Understanding Aortic Diseases (AUAD), this volume of proceedings contains the papers presented in both the oral and poster sessions. The 8th AUAD symposium greatly contributed to the understanding of aortic diseases, especially in Asia. Aortic diseases, specifically thoracic aortic diseases, are more common in Japan than in Western countries, which adds further importance to this compilation that covers recent improvements and advances in thoracic aortic surgery and its outcomes. Divided into lectures, panel discussions, symposiums, and poster sessions, the book includes, among other topics, advances in imaging and diagnosis with 3D-CT, MRS, and US; state-of-the-art repair of the thoracic aorta; novel aspects of aortic root replacement; reconstruction; and prosthetic graft surgery. This valuable collection of work provides the reader with an increased knowledge and understanding of aortic diseases not only in Japan but worldwide.
