Individualized Diabetes Management: A Guide for Primary Care 1st Edition

In the past few decades a revolution in our approach to treating type 2 diabetes has occurred following the recognition that the condition is caused by multiple defects. A range of new treatments are now available, with many more forthcoming, utilising differing mechanisms of action that allow targeted and more effective therapy of this multifactorial disease than ever before.

The increasing requirement in the UK to move much of diabetes practice into the community requires much more detailed knowledge of the condition by GPs and practice nurses. In this bespoke book, the authors aim to show how new mechanisms of glucose control and advances in treatments arising from this can tailor treatment to the individual in primary care. This book incorporates the recently published ADA/EASD guidelines and the 2015 update from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Essential reading for the multi-professional diabetes care team, this book should also be of interest to hospital specialists in training.

Frontiers in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

This book presenting the latest thinking on Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility is truly international as the authors hail from no less than four different continents (North America, Europe, Australia and Asia). The idea for this book was conceived during the XII World Congress On Fertility and Sterility where the unique confluence of our distinguished authors occurred in Singapore in October 1986. The authors were involved in the Pre And Post Congress Scientific Programmes which we organised. The overwhelming success of the Congress and the Pre And Post Congress Scientific Programmes prompted this book so that those unable to attend the meeting will still be able to benefit from the vast range of topics covered. This book will be a valuable addition to the knowledge in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and will be useful reading for those wishing to pursue this subspecialty. The authors are indebted to Lee Foundation (Singapore) for help in the publication of this book. We would also like to thank Miss Jam Siew Fong and Miss Tang May Mey for their excellent secretarial assistance. Endocrine Disrupters: Hazard Testing and Assessment Methods 1st Edition

Endocrine disrupters are chemicals—both man-made and natural—that interfere with the body’s endocrine system, potentially resulting in adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects. In recent years, a number of regulatory authorities around the world have drafted or enacted legislation that requires the detection and assessment of the effects of endocrine disrupters on both humans and wildlife. In response, this book provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on the latest tested and proven methods used to detect and assess the environmental hazards posed by endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Endocrine Disrupters is divided into chapters covering each major taxon as well as chapters dedicated to hazard assessment and regulation. The book covers testing methods for all the vertebrate groups and several invertebrate phyla, including:

  • Crustaceans and mollusks
  • Insects
  • Fish
  • Amphibians and reptiles
  • Birds and mammals

Moreover, the book emphasizes practical, ethical testing methods that combine sensitivity, efficiency, statistical power, and reasonable cost.

Each chapter is written by one or more international experts in ecotoxicology, offering readers step-by-step guidance for implementing each method based on the latest research and the authors’ firsthand laboratory experience. Furthermore, all the chapters have been subjected to a rigorous peer review and edited in light of the reviewers’ comments. References at the end of each chapter guide readers to the literature in the field.

Endocrine Disrupters is recommended for scientists who need to test chemicals for possible endocrine-disrupting properties. It is also recommended for regulatory authorities who need to decide whether particular chemicals can be safely marketed.
